Daily Cleaning & Care Tips

The natural stone you have purchased for your home or office is an investment that will give you many years of beauty. Stone is a natural product, and simple care and maintenance will keep it looking beautiful. Sealing is a common step taken on some stones as an extra precaution against staining. Sealing does not make the stone stain proof, rather it makes the stone more stain resistant.

TO DO
Clean stone surfaces with a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water.
Clean spills immediately, especially acidic substances like tomato sauce, coffee, or citrus juices. Flush the area with water and mild soap and rinse several times. Repeat as necessary.
Use coasters under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices.
Use a cutting board. Natural stone is too porous to use for cutting raw meat, poultry and fish, because it absorbs bacteria.
TO AVOID
While many stones can withstand heat, the use of trivets or mats is recommended. Quick temperature changes may cause stone to crack.
Scouring powders or creams often contain abrasives that may scratch certain stones. Use only approved products for stone cleaning available by contacting Valley View Granite.
Products containing lemon, vinegar or other acids may dull or etch calcareous stones. Laundry rust stain removers and toilet bowl cleaners contain trace levels of hydrofluoric acid (HF).
Do not sit or stand on your counter tops. Stone is hard but not flexible and can crack under too much weight.
